Due to public health measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Spain and in the United States, we are only able to offer extremely limited U.S. citizenship services at this time. As a result, we are canceling all routine passport and citizenship appointments scheduled at U.S. Embassy Madrid and U.S. Consulate General Barcelona.
If you have an emergency need to travel, or if you require a U.S. passport for other urgent reasons, please email us at askACS@state.gov or BarcelonaACS@state.gov for guidance. We may be able to issue you an emergency passport valid for up to one year, including for newborns who have not yet been issued a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.
If you do not have immediate travel plans or need a passport for other emergency reasons, please wait until we resume normal operations to apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or passport, either by mail or in person. Mail-in passport renewal operations will remain limited until full passport processing resumes in the United States. Click here for more information.
Monitor our website for more information about our operating status, and remember to join the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to ensure you receive our latest messages and alerts. We will announce the resumption of normal operations on our website and via STEP.
There is no walk-in service for United States citizens who require a service related to citizenship. These services are by appointment only:
