The Jamie Baum Quartet Promotes Jazz among Young Spanish Musicians

Taking advantage of her presence in Madrid to participate in JazzMadrid, Madrid’s International Jazz Festival, the Embassy arranged for U.S. jazz flutist, composer, and educator Jamie Baum to give two workshops to young musicians, together with her band, made up of pianist Luis Perdomo, drummer Jeff Hirshfield, and double-bassist Tom Warburton. At the Arturo Soria Conservatory of Music in Madrid and the Padre Antonio Soler Primary and High School of Music in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the Jamie Baum Quartet started by playing works by Thelonious Monk and Jamie Baum, among others, after which they conversed with the students about the life of a professional jazz musician. At the Conservatory, the quartet worked with a group of combos. At the School, they split into two groups to work separately on improvisation with the rhythm and the woodwind and brass sections.
