Global Classrooms

Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Joe Mellott delivered remarks at the Comunidad de Madrid’s reception to celebrate the successful participation of the Spanish Public Schools Delegation at the May 2021 Virtual International Global Classrooms model UN conference, and recognize the effort of the 40 bilingual public school students, their teachers, and Fulbright and American English Teaching Assistants who were presented the “Best Delegation Award” in recognition of their exceptional performance in the committees.

For more than a decade, the Embassy has been a strong supporter of Global Classrooms, a program that provides public school students the opportunity to develop the skills required for today’s global marketplace, including the ability to communicate in English. The project is sponsored by the United Nations Association of the United States, in partnership with Madrid’s Department of Education, the Fulbright Commission, and the British Council.  Over its 15 years of existence, approximately 17,000 students have participated in this Model UN conference. In previous years, the Embassy has funded the in-person participation of the ten best-performing students and two English Teaching Assistants in the May Model UN International Conference at UN headquarters in New York.
