“Poetry and Science” Presentations

American poet and academic Alison Hawthorne Deming

Poetry and Science presentations by Alison Hawthorne Deming engage audiences in Madrid, Cáceres, and Mérida.  American poet and academic Alison Hawthorne Deming, Regents’ Professor at the University of Arizona, delivered presentations to packed rooms of high school students in Fuenlabrada and Cáceres, and to University of Extremadura students in Mérida and Cáceres during her speaker program in April 2017.  The students and faculty were intrigued by Professor Deming’s efforts to connect the worlds of science and poetry, resulting in very positive feedback about the presentations as “thought-provoking” which “opened ways to work across disciplines.”  Professor Deming also delivered the keynote address at the 13th American Studies Association of Spain (SAAS) Conference in Cáceres, which not only included participants from over 60 Spanish universities but also featured the participation of scholars from Pakistan, Taiwan, Italy, the UK, Poland, Sweden, France, Ireland, Montenegro, and the United States.  During the conference, the SAAS Board made a special point of thanking the U.S. Embassy for its decades-long support to the American Studies Association of Spain.
