Passport Renewal by Mail and Online Fee Payment for U.S. citizens residing in Spain and Andorra

To process a passport renewal by mail you will need to mail the following documents to either U.S. Embassy Madrid or Consulate General Barcelona:

U.S. Embassy Madrid ONLY:  If you prefer to drop off your envelope with the application and supporting documents for adult passport renewal at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid instead of mailing it, a drop box is available for adult passport renewals only. This drop box is located inside the embassy in Calle Serrano 75.  Applicants may drop off their adult passport renewal envelopes without an appointment Monday through Friday between 8:00 pm and 11:00 am, except on local and federal holidays (PDF 300K).

Please don’t schedule an appointment for an adult passport renewal. If you do, you will be asked to drop your passport application envelope in the drop box.

DO NOT MAIL YOUR APPLICATION TO THE UNITED STATES!

Important Note: United States citizens residing outside the United States or Canada CANNOT submit this form to the U.S. addresses listed on page 2 of the application form.

Step 1: SIGN, DATE, AND COMPLETE the passport renewal form, DS-82. This form is completed online, not handwritten (print one-sided pages only, complete barcode appearing in upper left-hand corner). Please be sure to complete all fields and include your local contact telephone number, Social Security number, and emergency contact.

*NOTE: You must provide a Social Security number if you have been issued one. If you do not have a Social Security number, please email us at askACS@state.gov (Madrid) or BarcelonaACS@state.gov (Barcelona).

Step 2: Obtain one WHITE background color passport photo 2” x 2” (5 x 5 cm) taken within the past 6 months. The photo must show your full face looking forward, no plastic photos accepted, with a light, plain background, size as shown above, and no smile. You may not wear eyeglasses, sunglasses, hats, hair bands or anything on your head.

Step 3: Submit your most RECENT PASSPORT plus a PHOTOCOPY of the photo (biodata) page of the passport. Upon issuance of your new passport, we will cancel your old passport in accordance with State Department regulations and return it to you.

Step 4: Submit NAME CHANGE documents (if applicable) (original + 1 photocopy)

If you would like to change the name on your new passport due to marriage, divorce, or court order, please include proof of your name change. Documents must be original with English translation if applicable (ex. Marriage Certificate, Divorce Decree, Court Order)

Step 5: PAY the $130 passport application fee via the U.S. government’s secure payment site (Pay.gov). After successfully paying the fee, you must PRINT out the electronic payment confirmation you receive via email and include it in the package you send to the U.S. Embassy Madrid/U.S. Consulate General Barcelona.

Step 6: Please click on options for passport returns from Madrid and Barcelona.

Step 7: Mail all the items listed above to the U.S. Embassy Madrid or U.S. Consulate General Barcelona. You are strongly encouraged to send your DS-82 passport renewal package via registered mail or courier.

Step 8: Passport processing takes approximately 4-6 weeks.
