Health Alert – Update on Operating Status for Consular Services and Travel between the United States and Spain – U.S. Embassy Madrid, U.S. Consulate General Barcelona (25 June 2020)
Location: Spain – Level 4: Do Not Travel
Event: We have resumed limited citizenship services for U.S. citizens at the Embassy in Madrid, the Consulate General in Barcelona, and the five consular agencies in Spain. In-person services for U.S. citizens are provided by appointment only. You must wear a mask covering your mouth and nose at all times if you have an in-person appointment at one of our offices. Be sure to arrive on time and bring only the individuals with you who are required for the appointment. This will help us meet social distancing requirements and control the spread of COVID-19. The consular agencies will accept payment by credit card only.
Routine U.S. visa services remain suspended.
Limited commercial options to return to the United States from Spain are available, although flight cancellations are frequent. Work with your airline directly to re-book your flight or obtain a refund after a cancellation. U.S. citizens and U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) are permitted to return to the United States from the European Schengen zone, including Spain.
According to a Spanish government order dated June 29, starting on July 1, Schengen borders are open for Schengen-country passport holders or legal residents, long-term visa holders, or students with a valid student visa. Spain’s borders remain closed to U.S. citizens who do not fall into one of these categories.
Check the EU portal http://reopen.europa.eu/ or contact the Embassy of Spain about your specific situation before you travel.
