Health Alert – Spanish Borders Remain Closed; Self-Quarantine Requirement for Travelers Arriving in Spain – U.S. Embassy Madrid, U.S. Consulate General Barcelona (14 May 2020)

Location:  Spain – Level 4:  Do Not Travel

Event:  The Ministry of Interior extended an order closing Spain’s borders through May 23. The Ministry of Health established a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine period for inbound travelers effective May 15, to be enforced during the ongoing State of Alarm and subject to possible extensions. During the mandatory self-quarantine period, you will be allowed to leave your home/accommodation only to shop for food, medications, or other basic necessities, to seek medical assistance, or in other very limited emergency circumstances. The self-quarantine requirement applies to all international travelers eligible to enter Spain with exceptions for cross-border workers (including health professionals), transporters of goods, and crews of ships and planes.

Actions to Take:

  • Call Spanish emergency numbers 112 and 061 right away if you believe you may have COVID-19. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that people are reporting a wide range of COVID-19 symptoms. For a list of local COVID-19 emergency numbers, please visit this website.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities. Not doing so could result in fines or arrest.
