The American Space Madrid hosted 25 bilingual primary school teachers from the Madrid Community during the first week of July as part of a teacher-training workshop entitled “Digital Literacies: Incorporating the Maker Movement into the English Language Learning Classroom. “ The course immersed participants in collaborative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) learning and digital literacy experiences. Lorella Lamonaca, an experienced American educator who is currently a teacher in the Scarsdale, NY public school system, shared with the Spanish teachers her experience with “Makerspaces.” These spaces are becoming a part of the national education landscape in the United States. Ms. Lamonaca even designed and equipped a “Makerspace” in the International Institute where the American Space is located to share with the Spanish teachers how new technologies can have a profound impact on the way students communicate and learn today, facilitating interaction and allowing students to collaborate more effectively.
