Citizens of the United States of America
Most Americans who work in the embassy and the Barcelona consulate are permanent employees of agencies in the United States, which assign them here for periods of two to four years from Washington: Foreign Service officers and staff of the Departments of State, Commerce, and Agriculture, and the Public Affairs Section; military personnel; law enforcement officers from the FBI and DEA; etc. To learn more about a career in the Foreign Service, visit the careers page of the Department of State.
Locally hired staff are Spanish citizens and other residents in Spain. As for American citizens, only those who are residents of Spain and have a work permit may apply by sending an ”Application for Employment as a Locally Employed Staff or Family Member (DS-174)”, which is available in the website of the Embassy with a cover letter and any other requirements stated in the vacancy announcements.
