June 13, 2022

ANNOUNCEMENT:  Beginning February 27, 2022, U.S. Embassy Madrid and U.S. Consulate General Barcelona will begin accepting online fee payments for adult U.S. passport renewal applications. Paying online allows you to mail your application to the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate without the need to apply in person. Qualifying adult passport renewal applicants may pay the passport renewal fee online via U.S. or international credit or debit card, electronic funds transfer from a U.S.-based bank account, Amazon Pay, or Pay Pal.

Please note that the online fee option is limited to U.S. citizens residing in Spain and Andorra.  U.S. citizens who reside outside of Spain or Andorra are not eligible for the online fee payment option at this time. Online fee payment is currently available for passport book renewals only. If you wish to renew or apply for a passport card, you must make an appointment to apply in person at the Embassy or Consulate nearest to you.

Adult passport renewals are done by mail for both U.S. Embassy Madrid and U.S. Consulate Barcelona or via a drop box at U.S. Embassy Madrid.

Via Mail: You will need to mail your application and supporting documents to either U.S. Embassy Madrid or Consulate General Barcelona:

U.S. Consulate General Barcelona

Important Note: United States citizens residing outside the United States or Canada CANNOT submit this form to the U.S. addresses listed on page 2 of the application form.

Via Drop Box (U.S. Embassy Madrid ONLY):  If you prefer to drop off your envelope with the application and supporting documents for adult passport renewal at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid instead of mailing it, a drop box is available for adult passport renewals only. This drop box is located inside the embassy in Calle Serrano 75.  Applicants may drop off their adult passport renewal envelopes without an appointment Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 11:00 am, except on local and federal holidays (PDF 300K).

Please don’t schedule an appointment for an adult passport renewal. If you do, you will be asked to drop your passport application envelope in the drop box.

Adult passport renewals MUST be done by mail using form DS-82 if you can answer YES to all of the following:

  • I can submit my most recent U.S. passport book by mail with my renewal application;
  • I was at least 16 years old when your most recent passport book was issued;
  • I was issued my most recent U.S. passport book less than 15 years ago;
  • My most recent U.S. passport book has a validity of 10 years from issuance to expiration;
  • My most recent U.S. passport book was issued in my current name (or I can document my name change by submitting marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order with my passport application;) and
  • I currently reside in and/or have a valid mailing address in Spain or Andorra.

If you can answer “yes” to all the previous statements, you must use form DS-82 (U.S. Passport Renewal Application for Eligible Individuals) and you are required to click here for instructions on renewing your passport by mail. To avoid unnecessary delays, please follow these instructions carefully, including instructions for online fee payment. If you are eligible to renew your passport by mail, please utilize this option to avoid visiting the Embassy/Consulate. We will not grant in-person appointments to applicants who are eligible to renew by mail and have the time to do so.

If you answered “NO” to any of the above questions, please click here for instructions; your application will be on the DS-11 form and you must follow the same process as “first-time applicants.”
